Located in a bay bathed by the Atlantic Ocean on the island of Madeira’s southern coast, Funchal is the capital of the Madeira Island chain. The island of Madeira’s capital city and biggest tourist hub is cosmopolitan and full of history, culture and entertainment. Its name comes from “funcho”, a wild herb once abundant at the time of its first settlement.
In the shape of an amphitheatre, the municipality of Funchal extends along a slope ranging from sea level to 1,818 metres above sea level at Pico do Arieiro.
The scenery is highly diverse, with year-round activities, attractions and entertainment.
It’s one of the region’s oldest municipalities, it became a city in 1508 by Royal Charter under D. Manuel I, and has always done well due to its strong economic, social and cultural potential.
The city of Funchal has many leisure activities to offer, you can visit the magnificent monuments, museums and gardens, go shopping, explore the typical Portuguese-style cobbled streets, or simply have a pleasant time sitting on a terrace.
Don’t miss the chance to visit the city’s old town, a picturesque historic centre that’s lively and full of colour. There you’ll find the “Open Arts Trail” project, along with the various traditional bars and restaurants.

The island of Madeira is located 310 miles from the African coast, and 620 miles from the European continent, which is the equivalent to 1 hour and 30 minutes flight from Lisbon. The archipelago, discovered by the Portuguese in 1418, is made up of the Islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, and the uninhabited Islands of Selvagens and Desertas (both Natural Reserves).
These islands, because of their privileged geographical position and mountainous relief, have a surprisingly mild climate and a moderate level of humidity, conferring these islands’ exceptional subtropical features. The seawater temperature is also very mild, because of the influence of the warm Gulf Stream, presenting averages of 24ºC in the summer and 18º in the winter.
Although it is small, Madeira is rich in majestic scenery and rare beauty. Go and explore the charms and delights of this floating garden!
The main places to visit in the Madeira Islands are Funchal, Caniço, the east coast (Santa Cruz and Machico), the west coast (Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol and Calheta), the north coast (Porto Moniz; São Vicente and Santana) and Porto Santo.
Delight yourself with the countless views, on an island of such outstanding natural beauty!
